concerning “least bad” choices

Posted on Friday, September 16, 2016

“Where I am coming to, because of the threat of ISIS… maybe we have to make a bad choice… a least bad choice”.  – Author Thomas Friedman on Charlie Rose

Friedman was responding to a question about the challenge awaiting the next U.S. President in dealing with ISIS. The next President will have to provide leadership in choosing the least bad option. This statement triggered some reflection on my part concerning “least bad choices.”

We are sometimes called upon to make “least bad choices.”

  • Surgery or radiation
  • Put up with incompetence or fire your sister
  • Vote in the upcoming American Presidential election

As we approach the civic obligation to vote in the presidential election in two months, I find myself in many conversations, as you do, debating what serious Christ-followers should do in light of the leader choices placed before us by the political parties.

I offer the following 7 random musings for your consideration:

  • JESUS CHRIST alone is Lord over all.
  • Christ followers reside among the nations of the earth under many governments and live in peace while focusing on following Jesus and inviting others to join them in following Him.
  • It is possible to make a government system, any government system, an idol.
  • It is the natural trajectory of human governments everywhere to practice self-aggrandizement and behave in self-serving ways - consolidating power at the expense of the electorate - this is not a new phenomenon.
  • Christian doctrine teaches the sanctity of human life - indeed all human life matters, from conception to heaven.
  • Christian ethics calls upon believers to always remember in our interaction with every person that there is an eternal soul in there that requires our respectful and thoughtful nurturing. Because every life matters, Christians embrace the mission of God and seek to model the words and ways of our Savior-including our political discussions.
  • We have been given a timeless formula for all believers in every country under every government on the earth in 2 Chronicles 7:14 that we should practice in such a time as this.

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
